SolidarityNow and CARE cooperate to provide urgent nutritional support to vulnerable populations<\/strong><\/p>\n They allocated 650 food coupons in Athens and northern Greece to<\/strong> The program is implemented by the cooperation of Praksis, Arsis, Network for Children’s Rights, Association Together for the Child and the Asylum Service<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n In order to provide immediate relief to vulnerable populations-refugees, migrants, unemployed Greeks in distress, people without legal documents or those who have applied for asylum, and general population groups affected by the acute effects of the humanitarian crisis in Greece-SolidarityNow and CARE International within the START Network actions, implemented jointly a program that responds to the vital food needs of these people.<\/strong><\/p>\n The program aims also to fill a gap regarding the needs of population groups that are excluded from the current institutional programs. SolidarityNow and CARE provide cash vouchers so that vulnerable people can decide for themselves which food items they wish to purchase. By giving refugees the flexibility to use vouchers in supermarkets according to their individual needs, the organizations aim to empower families in need and ensure their dignity.<\/p>\n Because every person is entitled to food. \nOn Wednesday, the 27th, and Thursday, April 28, 2016, a total of 650 food coupons – 400 coupons in Athens and 250 in Thessaloniki – were distributed as part of a program entitled Care4Solidarity, by both organizations and, with the valuable cooperation of the partner organizations of SolidarityNow at the Athens Solidarity Center (across from Larissa Station).
\nSpecifically, 400 coupons to purchase food were distributed at the Athens Solidarity Center, with the help of Praksis, Arsis, Network for Children’s Rights, Association \u201cTogether for Children\u201d and the Asylum Service. Similarly, at the Solidarity Center in Thessaloniki, 250 coupons were distributed and were given hand-to-hand to homes and to places where these population groups are staying temporarily.
\nThrough the network of the Solidarity Centers operated by SolidarityNow in Athens and Thessaloniki, our teams have identified the most urgent cases of individuals and beneficiaries with high vulnerability, who are in urgent need of food support: unemployed, families accommodated in houses, people who do not have the necessary resources, asylum seekers residing temporarily in the country until their relocation etc.<\/p>\n
\n“The right to food is a fundamental and inalienable right that should be enjoyed by all people irrespective of their place of origin, their religion, and their beliefs. This is the exact humanistic idea underlying the program which is jointly developed by CARE International and important organizations and institutions in Greece,”<\/em> says Epaminondas Farmakis. Managing Director at SolidarityNow. He continues: “Today, as Europe is going through another dark period, we are called to show that the reflexes of our solidarity have a solid foundation. And this for us simply translates to: no one without food. It’s the least we can do”.<\/em>
\n\u201cTens of thousands of people have been stranded in Greece after border shutdowns through the Balkans. People \u2013mostly women and children\u2013 live in rundown shelters, with limited access to food, medical care or protection. These people thought they had put the worst behind them, but now their ordeal continues. We hope that together with our experienced partner Solidarity Now we can at least meet some of their immediate humanitarian needs and show our solidarity and support\u201d,<\/em> says Iljitsj Wemerman who is leading CARE\u2019s emergency response in Greece.<\/p>\n
\nIt is important to note that the actions implemented are included in the pilot phase of the Care4Solidarity program. At the same time, after an on-the-spot recording of the needs by a specialized team of SolidarityNow, 300 special emergency kits-with dry food, antibacterial items, mosquito repellents, baby diapers, baby food, water, toiletries etc.- will be distributed to the people on the move with greater needs in Athens, especially in areas such as Victoria square, Pedion Areos, Larisa station, and the port of Piraeus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
