Job Overview

The Education Expert will oversee the implementation of ROMAtters: Promoting Education that Matters, a 24-month project implemented by SolidarityNow (SN) and funded by the EEA Grants aiming to address persistent educational inequalities affecting Roma children and youth in Greece. Building on SN’s methodology of activating the “educational triangle” of students, parents and teachers, the project delivers after-school and homework support in Roma-majority schools and settlements, inclusive education trainings for teachers and education stakeholders, Roma parental support groups, a participatory awareness-raising campaign, and a Policy Brief on Inclusive Education for Roma Children.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the project’s overall educational approach, grounded in the “educational triangle” of students, parents and teachers, ensuring that it is culturally sensitive, community-owned and adapted to each school context (Roma-majority and mixed schools).
  • Support the coordination of project activities, helping to ensure they are delivered on time and in line with project objectives, donor requirements, and SN policies and standards.
  • Design, oversee and contribute to the implementation of non-formal education activities (after-school and homework support), including methodology, content, learning materials and quality standards; ensure activities are child-friendly, interactive and based on experiential learning.
  • Define and lead the approach for engaging Roma parents and families, including the set-up and facilitation approach of the Roma parental support groups, to strengthen parental involvement and family–school cooperation.
  • Liaise with schools, school directors and teachers, support the selection of participating schools, and build trust and cooperation between schools and Roma communities.
  • Contribute to the development of the Policy Brief on Inclusive Education for Roma Children, synthesising evidence from field activities, the Roma Advisory Board, teachers and parents and contribute to its dissemination activities.
  • Supervise, guide and support project staff and collaborators (e.g. educators, Roma Officer), monitoring the quality of service delivery and cooperate with the Roma Advisory Board, facilitating its meetings and ensuring its input meaningfully informs project design, implementation and advocacy.
  • Maintain strong relationships with project stakeholders, including Roma-led and community organisations, municipalities, education authorities and relevant national and international actors.
  • Oversee monitoring and data collection and prepare timely reports to donors.
  • Ensure compliance with SN’s Child Safeguarding Policy and child protection standards across all project activities.

Qualifications

  • Proven professional experience in Roma education, e.g. designing or delivering educational programmes for Roma children and youth, working directly with Roma communities, families and schools (Mandatory Requirement).
  • University degree (preferably Master’s) from an accredited academic institution, preferably in Education, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in managing or coordinating education or social inclusion projects, including planning, monitoring, reporting and team supervision.
  • Good knowledge of the Greek education system and of the barriers faced by Roma students (e.g. segregation, early school leaving, discrimination); familiarity with inclusive education standards and the National Roma Strategy is an asset.
  • Excellent writing skills; experience in drafting policy briefs, research or advocacy documents will be considered a strong asset.
  • Commitment to participatory approaches and to the meaningful participation of Roma people in decision-making.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Greek and English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Romani is a strong asset.
  • Strong sense of initiative, responsibility, ownership, and excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficient with MS Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word business software.
