JOINT PRESS RELEASE | Call by 17 Organizations: Do Not Abolish the Residence Permit for Unaccompanied Children Who Came of Age in Greece

The Greek Parliament Not to Abolish the Residence Permit for Unaccompanied Children Who Came of Age in Greece and Have Successfully Completed Three Years of Greek Schooling

Through a joint letter, a total of 17 Civil Society Organizations—many of which are members of the Child Rights Advocacy Network—call on the Greek Parliament not to adopt the abolition of the residence permit for unaccompanied children who came of age in Greece and have successfully completed three years of Greek schooling, as provided for in Article 38 of the draft bill currently under discussion in Parliament by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.

Among other points, and as emphasized in the letter, this specific residence permit:

  • Was introduced in 2023, came into force in March 2024, and constituted a commitment made by the Prime Minister himself and the political leadership of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.

  • Is the only provision that offers protection to young people who entered and were registered in Greece as unaccompanied children.

  • Grants a residence permit to a group of third-country nationals who are, by definition, already integrated and productive—namely, young people who arrived in Greece as unaccompanied children and have successfully attended a significant number of years in Greek schools.

  • Keeps children engaged in education while simultaneously reducing the risk of exposure to juvenile delinquency and exploitation.

  • Its potential abolition would constitute a serious regression in child protection and would negate a long-term investment by the Greek state in the social and economic integration of young people who arrived as unaccompanied children. At the same time, it would undermine the coherence of migration policy, given that in recent years an approach has been developed that recognizes the need for special treatment of former unaccompanied children and their gradual integration.

The organizations co-signing the letter call on the Greek Parliament to reject the proposed abolition of the relevant provision and to adopt further measures that ensure effective child protection.

PRESS RELEASE | SolidarityNow joins Athens Pride 2024

Athens, 13 June 2024

For the third year, SolidarityNow employees and volunteers participate in Athens Pride, proudly supporting the struggle of the LGBTQI+ community. This year, we will meet on Saturday 15 June 2024, at 19.00 at Syntagma Square, to walk together on the road of equality and respect!

The slogan “A LAW IS NOT ENOUGH“, brings forward the inadequacies of the laws concerning the LGBTQI+ community, even though the very important law of equality in marriage and childbearing for same-sex couples (Law 4089/2024), has been legalized and is a landmark for the efforts for protective legislation for LGBTQI+ people in Greece.

SolidarityNow, stands by the side of LGBTQI+ people, offering essential help and support. Through actions and interventions, the organization seeks to always be there for the community by offering free legal support and representation in the legal gender identity recognition process, employment consultations, and psychosocial support at its Solidarity Centers in Athens and Thessaloniki. In addition, assists with support and care programs for refugees and migrants, members of the LGBTQI+ community, who face double stigma due to both gender identity and refugee status.

The presence of SolidarityNow supports and reinforces the message of unity and solidarity, joining voices in the struggle for social justice and equality.

ERT3: Kathimerina kai Apla

SolidarityNow visited ERT3 and the morning TV show “Kathimerina kai Apla” hosted by the hosts Elsa Poimenidou and Haris Arvanitidis. The visit was held in the context of the educational city tours, organized every Friday by the Blue Refugee Center of SolidarityNow in Thessaloniki. The aim of these educational city tours is to familiarize our beneficiaries with the city of Thessaloniki. In the studio of the TV show, refugees and immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Algeria and other countries spoke to the journalists about their lives in Thessaloniki and their dreams. All of them are asylum seekers. Some of them managed to speak in Greek as they are learning Greek in BRC. An ERT3 representative pulled back the curtains to show us what happens behind the scenes of ERT3, giving to our beneficiaries an insight into the many programmes produced there.
