KATHIMERINI: “People here are smiling and helping us”

LESVOS – MISSION. The kids playing ball in Kara Tepe -which was built as a road safety training park- are so focused on the game that they do not seem to be affected by what unfolds around them. In the temporary settlement, although the turnout on Tuesday was “limited” according to the standards of Mytilene, they continue to build more chemical toilets and prefabricated rooms, to identify refugees following the legal procedures and distribution of some basics by NGOs. As here only refugees from Syria are exclusively hosted, the hope that they will soon be leaving for somewhere ‘better’ is tangible. On their side, the French are working on identification procedures, Americans and Dutch help to settle them; all composing a peculiar Babel, where the agreement is achieved only with a few key-words in english.
