TYPOSTHES | Thessaloniki: Stereotypes prevent Roma from speaking Romani

The journalist Lemonia Vasvani from the Thessaloniki newspaper TYPOS writes about the Jaf Anglal programme and the educational workshop held by the organisations of the programme – SolidarityNow and AMKE REVMA – in Thessaloniki on the occasion of the 5th of November, World Day of Romani Language.

“Explaining the idea for this action, Georgia Kalpazidou, who is a linguist and philologist, and deals with the issue of the Romani language, told ‘TyposThes’: “We wanted to do a workshop in the framework of the program “Jaf Anglal” i.e. “Let’s go forward!”, which is implemented by SolidarityNow and AMKE REVMA and concerns the education and support of Roma students. Through the program, the empowerment of these students is promoted, highlighting the importance of the use of Romani language in the school context, as well as the understanding of bilingualism issues. In the workshop we will talk about the history of Greek Romani. A first introduction will be made to destigmatize the language and give examples of how it can work to remove stereotypes. Our aim is to have a meeting of acquaintance and contact”.
