ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΥΠΟΥ | Ομιλία του διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένου γενετιστή David Sinclair για τη στήριξη του SolidarityNow και του Μαζί για το Παιδί

Το SolidarityNow και το Μαζί για το Παιδί φιλοξένησαν τον γενετιστή, Καθηγητή της Ιατρικής Σχολής του Χάρβαρντ, Δρ. David Sinclair, σε φιλανθρωπικό δείπνο που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Περιστύλιο του Ζαππείου την Τετάρτη 12 Φεβρουαρίου. Η εκδήλωση είχε στόχο την ενίσχυση του έργου των δύο οργανισμών, που προσφέρουν υποστήριξη σε παιδιά και ευάλωτες κοινωνικές ομάδες.

Πλήθος καλεσμένων παρευρέθηκαν για να παρακολουθήσουν την ομιλία του Δρ. Sinclair με τίτλο: «Αντιστροφή της γήρανσης στους ανθρώπους: Πόσο κοντά είμαστε;» και να στηρίξουν το έργο των δυο οργανισμών.

Ο Δρ. David Sinclair είναι ένας από τους πιο επιδραστικούς επιστήμονες παγκοσμίως, γνωστός για το έργο του στον έλεγχο της διαδικασίας γήρανσης. Είναι Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Γενετικής της Ιατρικής Σχολής του Χάρβαρντ, στο Ινστιτούτο Blavatnik, ιδρυτικός Διευθυντής του Κέντρου Έρευνας για τη Γήρανση Paul F. Glenn και συν-αρχισυντάκτης του επιστημονικού περιοδικού “Aging”. Το έργο του επικεντρώνεται στην κατανόηση των μηχανισμών της γήρανσης και στην ανακάλυψη μεθόδων για την επιβράδυνση ή ακόμα και την αντιστροφή της.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της ομιλίας του, ο διακεκριμένος επιστήμονας παρουσίασε τα ευρήματα της έρευνάς του, η οποία επικεντρώνεται στην κατανόηση των γονιδίων που καταπολεμούν τις ασθένειες και τη γήρανση, με στόχο τη θεραπεία τους, ενώ παράλληλα αναφέρθηκε σε τεχνολογίες που αναπτύσσονται καθημερινά στο συγκεκριμένο τομέα. Τέλος, έδωσε απλές και χρήσιμες συμβουλές στο κοινό της εκδήλωσης για έναν τρόπο ζωής, που όλοι θα μπορούσαν να υιοθετήσουν, ανεξαρτήτως κοινωνικοοικονομικής κατάστασης, και έχει αποδειχθεί ότι έχει θετικό αντίκτυπο στη μακροζωϊα και στην επιβράδυνση της γήρανσης.

Η κυρία Αλεξάνδρα Μαρτίνου, Πρόεδρος του Μαζί για το Παιδί, δήλωσε: «Η εκδήλωση αυτή είναι μια υπενθύμιση της δύναμης της συνεργασίας και της καινοτομίας στη βελτίωση της ζωής των συνανθρώπων μας. Ευχαριστούμε θερμά τον Δρ. David Sinclair για την παρουσία του, καθώς και όλους όσοι παρευρέθηκαν και στήριξαν αυτή την πρωτοβουλία. Μαζί, ενισχύουμε τον αντίκτυπό μας και επεκτείνουμε την υποστήριξή μας σε όσους τη χρειάζονται περισσότερο.»

PRESS RELEASE | SolidarityNow organizes the Job Fair “Opportunity Now”!

SolidarityNow organizes on Saturday, 15th February at the Athens Solidarity Center*, the Job Fair “Opportunity Now”, with the support of Eurobank. The reception hours are from 10.00 to 18.00 and admission to the event is free of charge, aiming to promote equal access to the labour market for all.

15 companies from sectors such as tourism, construction, facilities management, catering and personnel management services will offer many jobs of various skills and levels of specialisation.

As part of the Job Fair, participants-job seekers will have the opportunity to talk to company representatives, submit their CVs and undergo on-site interviews. Participation in such a day is for many people an opportunity to gain knowledge of job readiness, to cultivate relevant skills and to test, in a safe environment, their abilities.

Week of Parallel Actions: Workshops on work

The Job Fair is accompanied by a series of parallel actions-workshops on work-related issues. From 10 to 14 February, workshops targeting different population groups, designed according to their needs, will be held.

The workshops aim to develop skills, prepare former unaccompanied minors for their access to the labour market, train workers supporting unaccompanied children, strengthen the skills of unemployed people and people aged 55+, refugees and migrants. In a society that respects human rights, everyone should have access to them – and access to work is a fundamental human right.

Discussion and Presentation of research

SolidarityNow and Generation 2.0 for Rights, Equality and Diversity invite you to a Roundtable, which will take place on Friday 14 February 2025, at 11:00, at the Athens Solidarity Center (2 Domokou Str.). A few words about the project and the research

The Revealing the Unseen Migrant Workers* project was launched in December 2023 with the aim of highlighting the precarious working conditions, undeclared work, labor exploitation, as well as the inequalities and discrimination faced by migrant workers in Greece.

The research was carried out with the participation of 228 respondents in Athens and Thessaloniki and offers a comprehensive picture of the reality experienced by migrants in the Greek labor market.

The event aims to open a meaningful dialogue on the institutional protection of migrant workers’ rights and the promotion of solutions that will contribute to reducing inequalities.

The presentation of the research will be available in print and digital format and will be posted on the organizations’ websites.

The event is open to the public.

* The “Revealing the Unseen Migrant Workers” project is implemented jointly by Generation 2.0 for Rights, Equality and Diversity and SolidarityNow with the support from the PICUM-Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants’ grant programme on labour rights and labour migration, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

Το SolidarityNow και η ΑΜΚΕ REVMA, σας προσκαλούν στην Τελική Εκδήλωση του έργου «Τζαφ Ανγκλάλ! Για την ενδυνάμωση της σχολικής φοίτησης των παιδιών Ρομά» την Πέμπτη 23 Ιανουαρίου 2025 στις 17:00 στα γραφεία του SolidarityNow, Πτολεμαίων 29Α (2ος όροφος) στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Το έργο ξεκίνησε τον Απρίλιο του 2024 και υλοποιήθηκε στη Βόρεια Ελλάδα στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος “Building a robust and democratic civic space” (BUILD)*, πραγματοποιώντας παρεμβάσεις σε τρεις κοινότητες Ρομά της Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας: τον Δενδροπόταμο -Δήμος Αμπελοκήπων Μενεμένης-, τον Δήμο Παύλου Μελά και τον Πέλεκα του Δήμου Κατερίνης.

Με στόχο την αντιμετώπιση των προκλήσεων που περιορίζουν το δικαίωμα στην εκπαίδευση σήμερα, το έργο εστίασε στην ενίσχυση του ρόλου των γονέων και των εκπαιδευτικών με στόχο την υποστήριξη των παιδιών, ώστε να εξασφαλιστεί η παραμονή τους στο σχολείο και η ολοκλήρωση της βασικής (υποχρεωτικής) εκπαίδευσης. Στο πλαίσιο των δράσεων του έργου ωφελήθηκαν περισσότεροι από 180 συμμετέχοντες (γονείς, εκπαιδευτικοί, παιδιά).

Η εκδήλωση θα περιλαμβάνει τα αποτελέσματα του έργου, καλές πρακτικές καθώς και ανοιχτή συζήτηση με εκπαιδευτικούς, γονείς και μαθητές για την εκπαίδευση των παιδιών Ρομά.

ARTICLE | HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 10/12: “WHAT ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE BECOMING?”

“What are all these people becoming?”

The people whom we see on the street are helpless, those we hear about who are burdened, others whose stories make us say “but can this happen?”, “how many misfortunes in one person”?

But then we go on with our own life, which also has its difficulties, even if it is much better and we are much more privileged than our fellow man. Are we apathetic? Seconds we show a safe compassion and then forget, or is life smarter, in its speed and violence, that we are forced into this behavior?

All, probably. Life happens, is fast and each person tries their best, as they mean it. But there are also the inherent oddities, the apparent deviations of a world that moves but at varying speeds, not the same for everyone, and certainly not such as to drive everyone forward. On the contrary, in too many cases speed translates into an ever-worsening situation, a situation that holds people back, or at best stagnant.

Where one is born, whether one is brought up in democratic or non-democratic conditions – family and social -, whether where one grows up has access to basic goods for human existence, whether one has access to human fundamentals, is decisive.

And yet, the man always fights it, even if he scores zero in all the above. He thinks, he dreams, he leaves, he emigrates, he looks for a better life. And what else can he do? It is up to inconceivable to the human mind that man can pause – give up any effort to exist, improve and evolve. He cannot stop. I wonder if he stopped, how would things be? There would probably be no things to wonder about. There would be nothing. This article would not be written either, there would be no object of reflection, no need to make sense of a non-existent life.

So, what are all these people doing in a world that is running at breakneck speed and in an age that does not seem to accept quiet, healthy reflection, attention, concentration, focus and almost demands that we be mostly happy, content and show it?

Our fellow human beings in need are left behind by this world and its times. It seems as if they are not part of them, but they are, and importantly so. And it is evident that the increase in the number of vulnerable people is very large and inversely proportional to the hysterical intensity of the climate of euphoria that is socially sought.

And this is where the human being comes in again. The one who is in a more advantageous position than the other but cares.

Perhaps it is one’s duty to ensure that no one is left behind; for our position in the world is not fixed and given. That is why caring and practical solidarity with our fellow human beings is the right way, the central avenue for moving from the individual to the collective, from our small world to the big one, to the one that includes everyone, cares for them, accepts them, stands by them. This is also the world of the so-called Civil Society – some people who, on their own initiative, have created groups and organized communities to support their fellow human beings in need.

The above, possibly utopian, one might say (but why not after all?!), is what drives SolidarityNow’s work, which has found a way to make it tangible through the Solidarity Centers it created a few years ago, precisely for this purpose. To stand by people and their needs, to listen to them, to give them a voice, hope, perspective and solutions. To leave no one behind.

The work of the Centers is enormous compared to the years of their operation. Admittedly difficult years for Greece and the whole world, but still the work is extremely important. And just as behind the work of any important Civil Society organisation there are not only impressive numbers, so too at SolidarityNow the lives of our fellow human beings that are being changed are impressive.

And now, as this article is being written at the Athens Solidarity Center, we find the files of the last 20 days of the Social Service, and we read the stories of seven people and the things that make you wonder “how many more misfortunes”. And yet in the results section of the stories things are promising for all seven people! Their lives have changed within the Center, they have found the support they needed, “they were not left behind”.

Greeks, migrants, refugees were supported, and they are succeeding! Their lives seem not to end, obstacles seem not to halt them, but to be a new beginning.

Maybe something can finally be done for all the people in need, if we work and care about it. And maybe that’s because we all need the concern of others, especially in our time of need. So, let’s not leave anyone behind, let’s find our common ground, which is far more numerous than our differences. Let’s try.

One last greeting for our friend Yiannis Boutaris.

Yiannis Boutaris was the embodiment of civil society and open society – what we need now more than ever.

As Mayor of Thessaloniki, he stood by our initiative to establish SolidarityNow’s first Solidarity Centre in Thessaloniki 11 years ago. He supported us from the very first moment, unstintingly, to overcome adversity and opposition, defying personal and political costs. He honored us with his presence and action as a member of the Board of Directors of the organization.

He was a politician in the essence of the word, seeing politics as the art of institutionalizing a public space open to all. Open-minded to the currents of the times, pioneering in conceiving and implementing what was necessary and feasible, Boutaris always aimed at open horizons. He had the courage to open new paths with action that went beyond the narrow party walls.

As mayor of Thessaloniki – a city he dreamed of as a beacon of great culture – he avoided easy solutions and narrow-minded introspection, giving his work an ecumenical character. With his determination and his example, he leaves us all a valuable and multi-dimensional legacy.

I will always be grateful to him for honouring me with his friendship. For us at SolidarityNow, his vision of an inclusive society is a legacy and a duty. We pledge to continue his work, keeping the bar he set so high.

My best wishes go out to his family whom he so honoured with his achievements.

PRESS RELEASE | Invitation to an opening party: A woman from Iraq creates her own “myth” in Thessaloniki

UNHCR and SolidarityNow invite you to celebrate with her!

“Ustura”, which means “myth” in Arabic, is the name of the restaurant that Shaimaa Al Kinani is opening, and she is celebrating with an opening party on October 31st at 15:30, 29 Valaoritou Street, in the center of Thessaloniki.

After four years in Greece, Shaimaa’s love for cooking and her need to create her own space led her to seek support from the Employability Service of the Blue Refugee Centre (BRC) of SolidarityNow in Thessaloniki.

There, through the BRC Livelihoods programme, implemented in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the employability counselors stood by Shaimaa’s side, step by step, helping her turn her dream into reality.

From obtaining the necessary permits and documents, to communicating with the relevant authorities, offering advice on entrepreneurship in Greece, and providing daily emotional support to a woman striving for autonomy through her work, the Employment Service counselors were Shaimaa’s allies.

Therefore, together, Shaimaa and the partners from SolidarityNow and UNHCR invite the residents of Thessaloniki to a celebration for the opening of her restaurant, which is also an invitation to a celebration of cultures, acceptance, and recognition!
