Advocacy plays a key role in achieving SN’s goals. The objective of the position is to strengthen the organisation’s policy and advocacy impact on issues related to social inclusion of vulnerable persons such as migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, Roma; those affected by the financial crisis including the unemployed and single parent families; and those affected by the lack of accessible, specialized or adapted services like the elderly, people with mental illness, disability. This includes developing and implementing strategies to advance SN’s advocacy priorities in collaboration with Governmental and non-Governmental actors and influence public opinion. To ensure our advocacy has the greatest impact, the post-holder will draw evidence directly from SN beneficiaries, explore strategic synergies between SN programmes and seek the creation of strategic alliances with civil society partners to improve people’s lives.

Responsibilities:

The Advocacy and Communications Officer will be responsible for producing and communicating the organization’s internal and external advocacy messages following the directions of the Advocacy and Communications Managers and in accordance with SN’s organizational strategy. S/he will produce and publicize content (traditional and digital) while developing and implementing media and social media advocacy campaigns to meet the advocacy and communicational needs of the organization and its projects.

In collaboration with the Advocacy Manager and Communications Manager, the Advocacy and Communications Officer will:

  • Support the implementation of SolidarityNow advocacy and communication priorities.
  • Produce and disseminate written material for internal and external use (briefings, letters, position papers, reports).
  • Participate in public consultations, providing relevant feedback.
  • Participate and represent the organization in various networks, institutions and working groups.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with state authorities, UN agencies, National and European Networks, NGOs, think tanks, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to promote SN’s priorities and nurture strategic alliances.
  • Perform targeted research concerning the national or regional context to support projects and inform programmatic orientations.
  • Organize advocacy activities aiming for better policy making/change.
  • Keep abreast of important developments and policy debates, regionally and internationally, finding opportunities for advocacy and noting comparative best practices.
  • Organize focus group discussions with beneficiary groups and conduct regular needs assessments in collaboration with MEAL Manager.
  • Support the capacity building of programme and field staff and key partners on advocacy through training, sharing best practices and supporting learning and knowledge management.
  • Contribute to the production of audiovisual and other communication material, such as e-Newsletter, Annual Activity Report, leaflets, project brochures etc.
  • Develop press stories related to SN projects aiming to maximize opportunities for positive impact.
  • Carry out other general communications tasks that may arise (translations, meetings, awareness campaigns, special events, conferences etc.)

Requirements:

  • University Degree Master’s equivalent in political or social sciences, international development, law or other relevant field of studies
  • Proven experience and skills in planning and implementing advocacy and campaign development.
  • Experience in the sectors of development / humanitarian service provision in an NGO, state authority or International Organisation
  • Experience working with/ engaging refugee/ migrant communities.
  • Fluent in Greek and English.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Solid understanding of relevant policy and legislative development processes.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Strong networking skills.
  • Good presentation and persuasion skills.
  • Ability to manage complex workloads, work independently, take initiative and deliver outputs on agreed deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills.

 

Desired

  • Knowledge of other languages, especially French or Arabic.
  • Experience and training on policy and advocacy.
  • Experience of policy research, having written and published policy reports and briefings and evaluating evidence of their impact.
  • Knowledge of migrant workers’ rights and working conditions in Greece.
