“(…) Τους τελευταίους μήνες, μέσα από την υποστήριξη της Υπηρεσίας Απασχόλησης του SolidarityNow, πέντε άνθρωποι ολοκλήρωσαν με επιτυχία τη διαδικασία υποβολής αιτήσεων εισαγωγής σε ελληνικά πανεπιστήμια για αλλοδαπούς-αλλοεθνείς υποψηφίους.

Ο 18χρονος Ουκρανός πρόσφυγας ξεκινά πλέον ένα νέο κεφάλαιο της ζωής του, σπουδάζοντας στο Τμήμα Λογιστικής και Χρηματοοικονομικών του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Αττικής στο Αιγάλεω.

Ένας 31χρονος από το Ιράν πέτυχε την εισαγωγή του στο Τμήμα Μηχανικών Τοπογραφίας και Γεωπληροφορικής του ίδιου πανεπιστημίου.

Μια νεαρή γυναίκα από την Αίγυπτο, απόφοιτη ελληνικού σχολείου στη χώρα της, κάνει πλέον το επόμενο βήμα, σπουδάζοντας στο Τμήμα Βιοϊατρικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Αττικής.

Ένας αναγνωρισμένος Σύρος πρόσφυγας, στην πέμπτη δεκαετία της ζωής του, αποδεικνύοντας ότι ποτέ δεν είναι αργά για να κυνηγήσει κανείς ένα όνειρο, πέτυχε την εισαγωγή του στη Νομική Σχολή του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης.

Και μια μητέρα δύο παιδιών με καταγωγή από το Ιράν κατάφερε να συνδυάσει τους πολλαπλούς ρόλους της ζωής της με την ακαδημαϊκή της πορεία, εισερχόμενη στο Τμήμα Φυσικοθεραπείας στη Λαμία, στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας.

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, Valia Savvidou, SolidarityNow’s Communications Officer, writes the article “What are all these people becoming?”.

“(…) Are we apathetic? Seconds we show a safe compassion and then forget, or is life smarter, in its speed and violence, that we are forced into this behavior?

All, probably. Life happens, is fast and each person tries their best, as they mean it. But there are also the inherent oddities, the apparent deviations of a world that moves but at varying speeds, not the same for everyone, and certainly not such as to drive everyone forward. On the contrary, in too many cases speed translates into an ever-worsening situation, a situation that holds people back, or at best stagnant.

Where one is born, whether one is brought up in democratic or non-democratic conditions – family and social -, whether where one grows up has access to basic goods for human existence, whether one has access to human fundamentals, is decisive.

And this is where the human being comes in again. The one who is in a more advantageous position than the other but cares.

The above, possibly utopian, one might say (but why not after all?!), is what drives SolidarityNow’s work, which has found a way to make it tangible through the Solidarity Centres it created a few years ago, precisely for this purpose. To stand by people and their needs, to listen to them, to give them a voice, hope, perspective and solutions. To leave no one behind. (…)”

“The tourism sector is one of the main sectors of the economy where refugees, asylum seekers and migrants find work. This is one of the main conclusions of the research carried out by SolidarityNow, entitled: “The employment experiences of asylum seekers and refugees in the tourism sector”.

As Marilyn Polena, SolidarityNow’s General Manager, tells APE-MPE, the survey showed that the majority of participants (74%) in the survey were employed in low-skilled positions or as support staff, such as cleaners, laundry workers, assistant cooks, waiters, waitresses, cooks and receptionists.”

The journalist Natasha Karathanou from the Athens-Macedonian News Agency writes about Shaimaa, a beneficiary of the SolidarityNow Blue Refugee Center who is opening her restaurant in the centre of Thessaloniki!

“In her first steps Shaimaa was mentored by the Employment Service of the Blue Refugee Centre (BRC) in Thessaloniki. There, through the BRC Livelihoods program implemented in collaboration with UNHCR Greece, the employment counsellors stood by her side, making her dream a reality step by step.”
