We all together said ‘by[e] plastic’ in an Open Day event!

K_Zirganos-Kazoleas for SolidarityNow

An educational action by SolidarityNow

What happened on Saturday, September 29th, among three machines, plastic objects and an excited group of people?

Despite the adverse weather conditions at the end of September, 20 people came eagerly and with increased curiosity at the SolidarityNow Intercultural Center “Diadromes” at 11am to learn how to recycle/up-cycling useless plastic materials.

All of them had brought plastic bottles, cups and bags in different sizes and for two hours they were informed and actively involved in a recycling/up-cycling process of plastic material.

After acquaintance between the associates, participants and machinery operators, one of the last presented to the public the categories of plastic, asking everyone then to separate the plastic objects they had brought based on what they’ve learned. The aim was to separate the objects in the different categories of plastic so that with the appropriate techniques the team could transform the plastic objects into something new and creative using the Precious Plastic machines.

And so, it happened.

The process was simple. Participants placed the plastic object in the cutting machine, then into the respective melting machine, and finally, the melted plastic was placed into a mold that had a polygonal shape. The participants welcomed the result of this procedure with great enthusiasm!

Because the result was an object that can be used in many ways: it was a polygonal tile that if painted can decorate a wall or can be utilized, among others, and as a coaster!

With the promise for many other similar actions and open days, the workshop was completed, and all together said ‘Bye’ and ‘By Plastic’, since they initially goodbye a plastic object and then created a brand new one by plastic.

Contact us at education@solidaritynow.org and get informed about the upcoming open day events of the By(e) Plastic program.

*The Open Day event was organized in the context of the educational program By(e) Plastic that is implemented by SolidarityNow, in collaboration with Electra Energy Cooperative and Precious Plastic Greece, while was also linked to the Goal 12 on “Responsible Consumption and Production”, one of the 17 Goals set in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the UN, and the event was jointly organized by SolidarityNow and the Hellenic Platform for Development.

**This educational action was implemented in the framework of the lifelong learning initiative entitled “Education Matters”, implemented by SolidarityNow since December 2017, in collaboration with Almasar and the support of the Development Forum.

Giorgos Moutafis for SolidarityNow

SolidarityNow’s two new innovative training programs meeting today’s needs

for specialization are Open to All

SolidarityNow makes the next step; the one towards refugees’ and migrants’ social inclusion into Greek society and the other by creating opportunities and conditions for strengthening the skills required of all vulnerable population groups -Greeks and all nationalities- by providing them free access to specialized knowledge.

In the framework of the lifelong learning program entitled “Education Matters”, implemented by SolidarityNow since December 2017, the organization adapts actions that respond to the participants’ everyday needs and enhance their skills set as one of its objectives, access to labour market. The two new programs are implemented at the Intercultural Center “Diadromes”, which is situated in Athens city center, in collaboration with Almasar and the support of the Development Forum. The Center “Diadromes” is a meeting point for people from different countries but with common goals and needs.

Our society will not benefit by considering young people as travelers who have missed the train and remain in a noisy waiting room facing a blank announcement board. In fact, the provision of educational services is not connected to where these young people will be in a few years“, says Antigone Lyberaki, SolidarityNow General Director and points out: “What they need, whether they stay or leave Greece, are skills, self-confidence, dreams and goals. Education will support their way towards a smooth social inclusion in their new society and reality, but also will strengthen them in their attempt to claim a decent job and the way of life they have dreamt; either in Greece or elsewhere.

8 WOMEN, 8 STORIES, 8TH OF MARCH | STORY NO5 | ZAINAB

Giorgos Moutafis for SolidarityNow

“I find myself through writing. When I write, I feel that I can say some things that I couldn’t say in real life”

“My dream is to live in Greece and to work as a playwright”, Zainab Annan says confidently, holding a blue notebook in which she writes her texts. “I wrote a poem for my mother”, she adds.

Zainab is 17 years old and comes from Lebanon. She is an extremely talented teenage girl. She loves literature, poetry, writing and fine arts. She has been living in Greece with her mother and her little brother for the last two years. She is in the third year of high school. Her favorite lessons are Mathematics, English and French. In the afternoons, after school, she takes foreign language classes at SolidarityNow’s Blue Refugee Center in Thessaloniki. Zainab can be characterized by maturity; a quality not everyone has at this age. She listens to opera and classical music. She prefers reading a book or drawing manga (Japanese comics), hanging out with her friends. During this time, she has made a very good Greek friend. “Her name is Chrysanthi. It took me a month to learn how to pronounce her name. Chrysanthi taught me many Greek words”, she notes.

At the age of 13 she read Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables”. This book influenced her and made her want to be a playwright. “I have two favorite writers. The first one is Astrid Lindgren, a well-known children’s author from Sweden and the second one is Victor Hugo. My favorite book is Les Misérables”, she says. “I find myself through writing. When I write, I feel that I can say some things that I couldn’t say in real life. I have written about many subjects, like the environment, women’s rights, the relationships between young persons and their parents, social media and advertising”, she adds. Sometimes she reads her articles to her mother or to her friends. However, as she tells us she prefers not to re-read them.

SolidarityNow team recognized her talent in writing and encouraged her to develop it. “I’m very happy now that I’m talking to you”, she says shyly. We asked her when was the last time she cried. “It’s been a long time, I have forgotten. I haven’t cried since I was in Lebanon. I don’t cry now, I feel stronger”, she underlines. Lebanon is far from Greece, but Zainab doesn’t forget what ties her with her motherland. One of her real heroes comes from Lebanon. Georges Khabbazand is a Lebanese actor, writer, director, comedian, musician, playwright, producer and Professor of Theater. “I like Khabbazand because he captures the joy and pain of human experience in a theatrical play”, she concludes.

On Mother’s Day, Zainab wrote a poem for her mother. The title of the poem is “Love and Affection”. She wanted to share it with us.

“Love and Affection”

I’m asking time for you.

It responds with one word.

This word expresses you,

for everything you did,

for your belief in me that I am the best

for your patience in the days when I did not have the conscience.

…….

Everything that I have done, or I will do

Are not compared to the sacrifice you offered me

Are not compared to the devotion, the affection, the tenderness.

My words don’t express me as I would like.

But that is all I can offer to you.

“Turn on the light and let me see / I want to build my future here ” – The story of Majd

Lyrics by Majd Sahed from Syria

The New Year’s Day of 2018 is the second for him in Greece and finds him to be a financial independent working man and student.

Majd from Syria is only 24 years old. Perhaps his age is the reason why he remembers his life up to today so accurately. While speaking about his experiences, he mentions an amazing number of details!

Majd is currently studying English at the American College of Deree in Athens; he is one out of the 78 refugees who got a scholarship under the framework of the program “Education Unites: From Camp to Campus scholarship program”*. This program is an initiative of the U.S. Embassy in Athens, implemented in collaboration with the American College of Thessaloniki-Anatolia College, Deree-American College of Greece and Perrotis College-American Farm School.

His ambition of becoming fluent in English, is necessary both for his work as an interpreter as well as for the achievement of his goals in terms of his artistic dreams. He wants to be able to translate his own lyrics, both in English and Greek, and he will soon make it. We feel the same for him, since it is apparent that this young man whatever he decides to do he will either do it good or not at all.

»… life is bitter / and sad

Voices, anger / little affection

guns everywhere / blood everywhere / I want to spread love everywhere

turn on the light and let me see / I want to build my future here

we are brothers not enemies / come with me / let’s build your country together…»

Majd was born in Syria in 1994; he belongs to a five-member family. He was an active and dynamic child and teenager and remains the same as an adult. When he was at school, Majd was also working voluntary in an artistic organization. His duties concerned the organization of theatrical and musical performances; for this activity, ISIS started threatening his life. However, Majd tried hard not to abandon his love for the theater and the dream of becoming an actor. At the age of 19 he had to become strong enough to overcome the life threats he was facing. He still remembers “the worst day of my life so far. The day they stole my identity card; without this card you are invisible.”

Still, he lives a regular, as he describes, life in Syria from 2013 to 2015. In 2015 his world collapses; his father dies. Majd becomes now the leader of the family, but he knows he cannot respond to this role as his mother wants. He wishes to leave the country knowing he will not be able to live normally if he stays and he cannot accept the fate of the persecuted.

Majd tells unbelievable stories about his long journey within Syria to reach Damascus. He thought that from there it would be easier for him to travel to Turkey. Majd relied only on himself. He came up with many stories in front of soldiers to save his life – “I lied, I was telling stories similar to horror movies’ scenarios to save myself.”

He finally escaped. Majd arrived initially in Istanbul and then to Greece. He lived in the port of Piraeus for two months. There, volunteers helped him to learn his first Greek and English. Today, he works as an interpreter at SolidarityNow, while studying at Deree College. «I don’t have colleagues in SolidarityNow. I have a family». Majd finds also the time to do rehearsals along with the members of the theatrical group to which he is a member. He will stay in Greece. Maybe at some point, the rest of his family manage to come too; until then, he will constantly try to improve his life.

“The path to social integration is not as difficult as we believe. If you are open and willing, you will make it. All together we will.”
